How does 2-step-authentication when using Authenticator App?


hi,

today i've been setting 2-step-authentication in important accounts.

last configured amazon, requieres not mobile phone, second method authenticate. choose "use authenticator app" option.

so, downloaded app google, , scanning picture given amazon app gave me code enter. after set correctly.

doubt is, didn't had sign in in authenticator app google. how can amazon verify code given app me? if didn't had make kind of link between app , amazon.

those authenticator apps work similar rsa secureid token if you've ever used one. basically, app generates number based off current time , unique id tied account. amazon's server doing same, generating code based off time , same unique id. since phone , amazon's servers should both synced internet time server, have same unique id, , using same algorithm, phone app , amazon's servers generate same code. when log in, type code shows in app, amazon generates code on end, if match, lets in.

scanned qr code containing unique id, everything's in sync. code entered test make sure worked. don't use 2fa on amazon, i'm assuming have option deactivate authenticator app if lose phone, changes unique id on account code generated app , server no longer match.
