Time Machine and External Drives


i used time machine backup macbook pro habitually. had set backup of external hard drives. have since moved on imac. connected "old" time machine drive new computer, , using machine's time machine drive, well. have connected of previous external hds new computer. if set tm include externals in backup of computer, going incrementally them backups exist when connected laptop, or going start brand new backup each of them since connected new computer? big waste of space. thanks!
