installing snow leopard no backup


i friend upgrade intel imac tiger snow leopard. not have backup hd imac.

i'm understanding should install sl using "clean install". have tb backup drive "my passport" on mac mini/mountain lion empty 168 gb partition .

1. can copy tiger on backup partition dropping macintosh hd icon onto empty partition?

if possible, , snow leopard has been installed on imac, have option transfer tiger applications , data onto snow leopard using snow leopard dvd? (apple store dvd)

2nd option: simply install snow leopard on top of tiger? if possible, leave applications , data in place?

know how make partition on hard drive, option?

needless say, i'm little rusty...
