rMBP Late 2013, Freezing - New Install, EFI Update?


have client's rmbp late 2013, no liquid damage or physical damage.
has ssd, failing hdd out of question.
ran apple's "extended" diagnostics via cmd+d on bootup, passed (minus battery, that's expected).

basically, lock once every...15-30 seconds?
unknown amount of time, doing nothing , locks up.
it's been reinstalled el capitan, mountain lion, mavericks, etc.

know it's not hardware issue because work fine (as it's supposed to) when booted "safe mode."

searched around, found big widespread issue, apple released efi update supposed solve issue.

computer has:
boot rom version: mbp111.0138.b16
smc version: 2.16f68

obviously, laptop out of warranty, want see if can before deeming logic board.

thoughts?
tried putting on os x mavericks, closest copy 10.9.5 supposed have efi update built in, , apple installers won't let me overwrite efi update.
can reflash efi?
 

if have 13" model, efi date. doesn't there have been updates smc.

that's correct. when os reinstalled, clean reinstall or there software either remains or installed after os install? if have clean install , having problems with lockup every 15-30 seconds, there's kind of hardware issue items not loaded in safe install. if case, if near apple store, can call , see if they'll - if it's no longer under warranty (obviously charge if hardware needed replaced).

if have non-osx software loaded on computer, problem software. may want (while in safe mode) in /library/logs/diagnosticreports , see if there files start "kernel" , have .panic extension. if there file(s) there, can post 1 here , see if can help.

also, if have kind of devices connected computer, try disconnecting them , see if have problem. if wifi being used, can try disabling , see if problem occurs well.
