Open folders in new tab while Finder is already open


forgive me asking question, i've used total finder function trying use apple's finder.

let's have finder window open showing mac hd. when click on icon external drive, finder opens window instead of opening new tab in existing window. have "open folders in tabs instead of new windows" selected. there way make new tab open default? seems feature doesn't work though it's offered. i'm running 10.11 gm btw. thanks!
