i'm looking order new imac , want opinions on drive configuration.
whilst can see merits of fusion drive, feel no option specify size of ssd portion disappointing. use computer web development , can have on 128gb of files in regular use if running mamp, software, large client database clone , associated site files. @ point, apple fusion drive potentially going slow down hdd speeds. in opinion, upgrade cost 1tb ssd excessive.
though have order 512gb ssd, , add new 3tb lacie thunderbolt 2 drive. set them 1 core storage volume , configure data tiering. i.e. create custom fusion drive of 3.5tb
give me speed benefits of ssd, large buffer of storage space, , advantage of automatic data management once ssd starts fill up, moving finished jobs thunderbolt drive, whilst bringing latest jobs ssd.
workable solution? has here done , got working correctly, i.e. not core storage. bto 512gb ssd have same data transfer rates pci-e 128gb ssd apple use factory fusion?
other option go factory fusion, , if finding machine sluggish once warranty has expired, swap out pci-e ssd larger size.
whilst stretch 1tb ssd bto, can't see massive gains on 512gb ssd if use setup mentioned above.
give me thoughts, opinions, , better still, real world experiences of type of setup.
you can't swap pcie drive out because uses proprietry connector , no 1 sells them, option 1 taken mac on ebay @ exhorbitant cost.
internal ssd's installed apple 4 lane pcie connected.
theorectically possible touse external fusion drive versions have seen have ssd in external , hdd in internel, assume works other way round you'll have research.
