Apple CEO Tim Cook: Virtual Reality is 'Really Cool', Has 'Interesting Applications'

during today's earnings call first fiscal quarter of 2016 (fourth calendar quarter), analyst gene munster asked tim cook share thoughts on virtual reality in effort hint on whether or not that's feature apple working on future devices. "what thoughts on vr theme?" munster asked. "is geeky niche or go mainstream?"

in response, tim cook said not believe virtual reality niche. "it's cool," said. "and has interesting applications."

virtual reality products oculus rift gaining in popularity, there has been speculation apple release kind of virtual reality or augmented reality feature in ios devices. apple reportedly has small team of employees working on exploring augmented reality field.

last week, apple hired 1 of leading virtual reality experts in united states, doug bowman. apple has made recent acquisitions point towards interest in vr/ar, including augmented reality startup metaio, real-time motion capture firm faceshift, , expression analysis startup emotient.

apple has filed several patents virtual reality products on years, including video goggles, motion-sensing 3d virtual interfaces ios devices, , 3d "hyper reality" displays.
