apple acquired firmware security company legbacore in november 2015, according security researcher trammell hudson, revealed acquisition in presentation @ 32c3 conference in december. legbacore's goal, according founder xeno kovah, is "to build systems secure know how make."

in november, kovah , fellow legbacore founder corey kallenberg revealed had joined apple full-time employees. couple days before that, legbacore's website announced "not accepting new customer engagements", noting website remain "to serve reference legbacore's past work."

legbacore had collaborated hudson on thunderstrike 2, first firmware worm affect mac computers. malware impossible remove, resistant both firmware , software updates. legbacore , hudson had alerted apple thunderstrike 2's vulnerabilities , apple began work on fixes, issuing 1 in june 2015.

on twitter, kovah said that apple began discussions legbacore after consultancy's presentation in summer 2015. became clear kovah , kallenberg apple had "some *very* interesting , highly impactful work" 2 participate in. convinced wind down legbacore's existing contracts , begin work @ apple.

while legbacore security consultancy firm doesn't own specific technology, it's apple use kovah , kallenberg's talent , knowledge improve firmware , software security in future iterations of apple's various hardware , software products. legbacore's work includes research on thunderstrike 2, "dead code" bios attacks , more.
