latest numbers research firm gartner reveal smartphone industry continues largely two-horse race between ios , android. 2 mobile operating systems combined 98.4 percent worldwide market share in fourth calendar quarter of 2015, compared 96.4 percent in year-ago quarter.

android remained world's used smartphone operating system 80.7 percent market share, while ios recorded 17.7 percent market share. fourth quarter has historically been successful iphone , android-based smartphone sales due holiday shopping season.

windows phone , blackberry smartphones accounted 1.1 percent , 0.2 percent market share respectively during three-month period ending december. results largely unsurprising, microsoft scaling windows phone efforts , blackberry released first android smartphone last year.
