Carrier Verizon-contract vs not contract vs prepaid-benefits??

i'm looking information regarding verizon plans new iphone account mom (she's going one! woot!)

when looking @ site appears still offer iphone on contract $499 or can buy outright. appears there no benefit buying outright (other than, guess, buying new phone in year, mom not anyways.)

also, benefit of prepaid? appears still pay monthly. still have data cap. still unlimited talk , text. no activation. (so guess that's benefit)

assume texts don't count against data imessages do?

also, on regular pricing, can go , down plans no penalty (so if starts @ 1gb uses more data, ups 3 while traveling, once home can lower 1?)

sorry questions... have at&t can't give real-life answers on verizon!

that's going tough 1 , you're going have dust of 'ol excel spreadsheet (or pen , paper) , math. personally, i'm staying on-contract. vzw gives $450 per phone (subsidy) both of our phones. that's $900 on course of 24 months. going off-contract save me, personally, $12/mo. comes out $288 on course of 24 months. sure, i'd 2gb more of data (that wouldn't use) $900 phone subsidy > $288 bill savings , having buy phones outright. ymmv though, need figure out works best mom. since doesn't know how data she'll use, sure on plan can change on fly. contract plans vzw should let change (at least add more).

luck!
