Imac formatt question


hi. mid 2011 imac has died (screen).
have removed hdd , backed data. want sell imac spairs/repairs how can formatt hdd go osx running still.
 

no need format if removed hard drive. or did install one? in case, have download installer os x version install , use prepare bootable usb or dvd, boot off , format/install.
