Mid-2010 MBP memory installation

hey everyone, i've been going around support forums , communities, , thought i'd bring here in case well-versed. have mid-2010 core i5, 4gb of ram.

i've been having kernel panics, unexpected shutdowns, , top off 3-short, 3-long, 3-short sos tone computer refusing boot. took nearest apple store , genius bar, , told me bottom slot holds 1 of sticks of ram in place has become loose, explain situation if 1 of sticks of memory pops out little bit whole computer shuts down (right?). cheapest way repair replace logic board through depot repair. however, informed top slot still working correctly.

i've had logic board replaced once video issues, on year ago. so, wondering, is possible install ram in top slot , leave bottom slot empty? i opened computer myself , appears top stick of ram won't sit , won't make contact unless there's stick installed in bottom well. when attempting run computer using 1 of original 2gb sticks (either stick) in top slot nothing in bottom, single tone every 5 seconds, indicates no ram installed.

can tell me if i'm able or not? or did screw up?

i'm wondering if should cut losses, rip out internal hard disk , put in enclosure, , buy new macbook pro - seems has turned nickel-and-dime situation @ point. other ram slot, logic board passed other tests, i'm still running on original battery, , both optical , hard drives working properly. but, want consider options before going it.

thanks!

it should possible install ram in 1 slot only, computer doesn't differentiate between slots. if isn't working in either slot both dead sounds of it.
