iPad Pro Yes, the iPad Pro charges SLOWLY. Here’s why.

so we’ve heard ipad pro slow charge, i’ve been doing research on actual numbers , have had interesting findings. i’m developer of battery/charging information app on app store called battery health , looking @ innards of ios devices in terms of batteries , power management. research based on live stats reported internal charger device driver on ipad pro.

ios devices ship internal charger chip (that's inside device, not power adapter ships it) configured charge battery @ rates, depending on several factors. battery charging speeds typically measured unit called c, fraction of total capacity of battery. example, 1000mah battery charges @ 0.5c indicates we’re charging 500ma current, or half of capacity. higher charging current, faster battery gets charged. ios devices, base charging rate constant current stage (the early, fast stage in charging process) around 0.55-0.65c.

example, iphone 6 plus has 2855mah battery , charges @ maximum current of 1730ma, or 0.60c. iphone 6s plus has smaller 2725mah battery, , maximum charging current 1790ma, or 0.65c, charges bit faster 6 plus. android phones go faster, .80c or 1c. catch faster charging shortens overall life of battery, quite apple playing safe these kind of numbers, why batteries tend last long.

now, ipad pro has gigantic 10,088mah (38.3w) battery, maximum input current @ usb port 2400ma (12w, same other recent ipads). when charge ipad pro, charger configured @ 0.55c, same many other ios devices. problem 10,088mah battery, comes 5560ma, or 28w.

this means ipad pro technically needs 28w charger charge @ optimal speed — @ intended speed. 12w charger ships supplying 40% of current required charge @ maximum speed.

what’s more alarming fact if push pro hard (full screen brightness, lte video streaming, etc.), current draw reaches 2400ma! means you plugged in 12w apple brick while using it, , battery won’t charged.

note best can tell, device configured maximum input current of 2400ma @ lightening port (again, that’s device reporting), wary of 3rd party chargers claim charge faster stock charger. i’ve not seen that, seems scam…

now, bottom line is, make sure charge ipad pro while in standby screen turned off. barely charge while being used, 12w charger.

update: apple has released usb-c lightning cable allows use of 29w macbook charger ipad pro.

yes annoying. "pro" device think usb-c port supported charging speeds similar retina macbook's 29w adapter have been justified. mentioned in thread, make charging apple pencil lot easier....
