best OS X for my old macbook

need help..just clean macbook (white, late 2009, 4 gb) , thinking if should change os x lion later version. need run good, not slow basic uses such microsoft word, internet , such..

i recommend 10.8.5 "mountain lion", if want keep spinning hard drive.

if replace old hdd ssd, might fine either yosemite or el capitan.

important:
no matter os upgrade to, suggest create external bootable cloned backup first, using either carboncopycloner or superduper clone contents of internal drive external.

way, if goes wrong during upgrade process, or if find don't ("too slow" or other reasons) -- having cloned backup make easy "get once belonged"...
