Not enough free space to install OS X


hi all, newbie forum here.

went install el capitan , informed remove files make enough room did (i had been having problems regarding big 'other' part taking on hard drive). installer went ahead , computer restarted; upon restarting informed did not have enough free space:

recklessly haven't backed computer isn't option. cannot start in safe mode, crashes displaying message no os x selected (or installed). also, tried , failed appointment @ genius bar.

know lot of big files in folder called 'movies' within 'downloads', , unnecessary applications in 'applications', it's being able navigate them in terminal delete said files (i'm not confident regarding terminal commands).

(if makes difference, when updating el capitan mac lost power , had reboot took me screen above i'm wondering if part of issue.)

have other macs @ hand if helps, i'd hate lose files.

hey, advise re indexing hdd , repair disk permissions in disk utility maybe clean cache files there lot of programs out on app store that.
