Running super slow in an office environment

hey all,

have 30 mac minis in office work in, myself have 15mbpr (correct abbreviation, not sure, sorry if isn't.) anyway have 30 minis, purchased brand new apple on last 1.5yrs. they're baseline models 4gb of ram still, , traditional hdd. folks use them typical office programs, chrome anywhere 4-15 tabs open depending on how organized are. they'll have hip chat open, inter office im program. might have numbers open or open office. might have spotify well, in addition notes , messages. remember using mini , locking up/getting slow time, switched positions , got 13" mba, , thing fly. on 15" retina , i'm spoiled. of these minis part running rather slow, simple things opening spotlight or system preference can task of several seconds , beach balling. i've taken time time @ activity monitor on of them , seems chrome quite ram hog, , physical ram usage hovering 3.5gb or closer max capacity of 4gb. question is, should put more pep in step of said minis? i'm pretty sure minis have upgradable ram, doubt of them are. there software wise them out? should upgrading ram 8gb, make difference? know activity monitor has reached 4gb @ moment i've opened it, doesn't mean time, know has, i'm not sure how trust activity monitor. other thought upgrade hdd small ssds. how of undertaking upgrade hdd of mini ssd , copy on data. input!

you don't specify model of macbook air comparing against, mbp retina has 4x memory , ssd vs. 5400rpm hdd of base mini. looks have quad-core, vs. dual-core of mini. if have 2015 mbp retina, ssd fast, 2x faster 2014 models.

find out model of mini have - it's 2014 model - 1.4 ghz. (press apple logo on top left , select "about mac".) can see why mbp faster mini's have.

if have 2014 model, ram cannot upgraded. ssd can put in 2014 model, you'll have swap hdd. ssd's have apple-proprietary pcie connector can added along hdd, can on used market (i.e., ebay) - maybe apple sell them separately favored corporate customers don't sell them consumers. ssd replacement in 2014 model not easy - numerous people have broken components while doing it. see following steps this:

https://www.ifixit.com/guide/mac+mini+late+2014+hard+drive+replacement/32815

if have 2012 model (not likely), can upgrade ram , add ssd existing hdd it's still not easy (perhaps easier 2014 model).

easier upgrade add external ssd - either usb or thunderbolt (more expensive). in offices, evolve, grow legs , walk away.
