Updates freeze on boot screens but internet recovery works perfectly


my mid 2013 macbook air has been working fine until tried updating el capitan. downloaded , ran installer when computer restarted took long time move through progress bar , got caught half way through progress bar. first thing did let run night in case because read of installs taking long time. after realized got stuck had friend make usb install me see if helps problem yielded similar results. @ point couldn't open recovery reason open internet recovery, install method works now. ideas of how can update? can't update @ now. i'm stuck 10.8.5. cannot update mavericks, yosmite or el capitan. have idea going on?
