iMac bad sectors, need OS install advice

i'm attempting fix friend's imac 10,1. has os 10.6.8 installed on it. i'm not macs, (usually pc guy).

anyhow, os hdd has bad sectors , presumably on verge of head crash. mavericks had downloaded, not let him install due smart monitoring detecting bad sectors.

has no physical copies of version of mac os x.

i've been able ahold of 2tb seagate 3.5 drive throw in it, i'm not sure how go restoring old os or installing mavericks or el capitan, or whatever.

i'm downloading el capitan , going throw on mac bootable usb thumbdrive using walkthrough found online...and going use time machine backed files restore programs...

there way get/create bootable disc? or can use bootable el capitan usb no issue?

i've not experience apple os's...only familiar ms os's (key's/licences, etc...).

in advance

yep bootable usb best, diskmaker x software used create mine.
