2012 i7 quad loses wifi connection

my mac mini connects unreliably wifi network. slow no connection. when usb drive attached connection degrades nil. when drive removed connection flakey: fast , drops dial-up speeds. other macs on same network connect @ close nominal fiber speed. apple told me upgrade os , see. tried downloading os installer, installing on external drive, , booting same. not connect, conclude software not problem , tat maybe usb starving wifi of power or wifi unit bad , why wifi connection fails.

if usb fried mean need new system board?

if wifi bad, subsystem can replaced. correct?

fortunately have applecare. i'm hopeful can fix mini since has upgraded ram , drive.

insights appreciated.

i have 2012 i7 mini. don't use wifi although when do, don't have problem.

usb drive issue interference. actually, wifi issue interference. i'd try reduce possible sources of interference (nearby usb, bluetooth, other wireless sources) , try again. don't recall on macrumors having wifi board power issue.

if drive upgraded , have had problems since upgrade, wasn't done correctly in upgrade. if have applecare, i'd take in , have looked at. @ least, should able figure out if it's interference problem. recall, people have had problems apple repairing mini if drive has been replaced, others not. there 2 components wifi - antenna attached grill , bluetooth/wifi card. 1 place selling bluetooth/wiffi card $80 new, fwiw.
