iMac late 2015: should I get external SSD for media cache?

hey everyone, i've posted couple of times on different topics new imac, promise last one! on last thread asked question towards bottom got buried figured i'd make 1 question. i'm going receiving new late 2015 imac 27 inch , have few questions storage. i've done research there various answers , value opinions members of site.

here specs:

4.0ghz quad-core intel core i7, turbo boost 4.2ghz
amd radeon r9 m395x 4gb video memory
32gb or 64gb ram owc, still undecided

video editor. use premiere, after effects, photoshop, , little bit of maya element 3d. films i'll making involve 4k shots (from phantom 3 uav , gh4), of time involving creations in after effects , involving 3d models in real life scenes, , around 2-10 minutes long.

question:

1. 512gb internal ssd or 1tb internal ssd? i'm trying decide how i'm going go , here 2 lines of thinking:
a. go 512gb ssd internal os, applications, , media cache/go raid (something owc thunderbay4 raid 5 8tb) media , renders.
b. go 1tb ssd internal os , applications, currently-being-worked-on project, cheaper/slower large (say 12tb) external storage drive house older projects, , 256gb or 512gb external ssd caches.
c. other

bad have external ssd cache? should on internal?

i'm new learning caches, drives, hardware questions, etc. don't hard on me if stuff seems easy you! thanks, , appreciate help!

premiere cc can quite sluggish editing h264 4k material, on top-spec 2015 imac 27. cpu issue not i/o or gpu adding more i/o bandwidth won't help.

main choice editing camera native material vs transcoding lower-compression codec such prores. if transcode, editing performance faster takes 8x space , i/o bandwidth more demanding.

not recommend external ssd cache or scratch files maybe more experienced premiere editors comment. of editing on fcp x, have done lot of editing on cs6 , testing on cc. ssd i/o bandwidth high , not i/o limited these tasks squandering i/o capacity.

thunderbay 4 in raid-5 array pretty fast. have edited three-camera h264 4k multicam using premiere cc on top-spec 2015 imac 27 , 8tb pegasus r4 overall similar in performance thunderbay 4. included material phantom vision 3 pro , gh4. there no problem on i/o pretty sluggish due high cpu load premiere's inefficient playback.

in general don't want keep older projects on primary storage because should backed , increases backup time , cost non-used material. budget standpoint remember must everything, if media on raid-5.

thunderbay 4 inexpensive, i'm not sure going cheaper worthwhile. remember should backed up.
