rMBP only wakes up with external display when plugged in


i have rmbp hooked external display , closed on stand. use apple's bluetooth keyboard , mouse wake sleep. however, wake , show on external display when have plugged in. have bluetooth devices enabled wake computer. how wake sleep when not plugged in?

can wake sleep fine or without being plugged in when not hooked external monitor , being used standalone laptop.
