Formatting error on a HGST 4TB hard drive

i have purchased 2 hgst 4 tb hard drives increase storage options. have 2010 5,1 mac pro running 10.10.5 yosemite.
tried initialising mac os extended(journaled) on first drive in bay 1 using disc utility. after 1 failed attempt formatted after second time , thought fine. drive formatted 400.09 gb , despite trying re initialise stuck on figure.
second drive initialised in external drive reader, , using drive genius time, guid partition table checked. when mounted in mac pro reads 4tb drive.
using external drive reader , drive genius , disc utility cannot re initialise 1st drive thing other 400.09gb.
ideas on can re-format drive correctly 4tb , assuming there nothing wrong hardware?

try resetting nvram disk installed, try re-formatting:

when new drive installed system won't recognize it. may or may not work it's easy , can't hurt system.
