democratic governor vetoed legislation prohibit naming public buildings , roads in california after confederate leaders.
“redskins” bill’s enactment comes 11 years after then-gov. arnold schwarzenegger vetoed similar legislation. brown signed bill without comment.
assembly bill 30, assemblyman luis alejo, d-watsonville, affect 4 high schools in california – in calaveras, merced , madera counties. bill let schools keep uniforms bearing name if purchased before 2017 long school selects new team name, mascot or nickname.
in 2004 veto of similar legislation, said local school boards should retain “general control on aspects of interscholastic policies.” opponents of year’s bill made similar argument.
brown himself appealed local control in vetoing senate bill 539, confederate bill. said in veto message issue “quintessentially local decision makers.”
