Resolved Help Needed - Formatting my LaCie hard drive and it has become stuck in the 'Partitioning' phase.


i'm new macrumors , forums in general matter bare me. memory on mid 2011 imac getting close limit , i've turned using external hard drives store footage. when came transfer video across morning surprised find lacie rugged 500gb did not establish connection via firewire. restarted imac (the old 'off , on') , met error message read along lines of "the external device connected not supported computer". wouldn't hard drive 100% operational means approaches 4 years old , has been sent lacie once before came in working condition , have used on same mac, , others, since.
showing in disk utility tried format (mac os extended (journaled)) hoping solve issue , raced through first half of progress bar has become stuck. has stopped @ 'partitioning' phase (as pictured) , estimated time has incrementally increase ever since starting @ 'less 1 minute' , post on 34 minutes. ideas/solutions? can unplug hard drive mid-format or sure fire route corruption? screen shot 2015-09-30 @ 10.26.11.png screen shot 2015-09-30 @ 10.42.06.png
 

the estimated time reached 1 hr 30mins, cut losses @ point , diconnected hard drive. reconnected via usb , able perform successful format. drive works through both peripherals. case closed.

Fallout 4 Builds- Which ones You Prefer?
