Gray screen when rebooting after bootcamp

i have late 2007 imac el capitan installed. trying install windows 7 windows 7 upgrade disc.

internal dvd drive broke, have external drive doing with.

run through bootcamp process, rebooting step , computer remains gray. using old external dvd drive thinking may not functioning expected bought new 1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/b00odde33u?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00) thinking issue. turns out not.

tried rebooting hitting option , selecting efi boot (the portable dvd drive) option , hangs right click it.

tried other windows discs (windows 7, xp, 8) , have same exact issue.

ever encounter this?

i don't believe can install windows external disk drive. there no usb drivers present until after windows boots , windows 7 drivers installed. imac internal disk drive works because of firmware built imac. there work arounds use external disk drive or flash drive don't have link one. perhaps else know.
