Ultimate Tiger Speedup Guide for Single Processor G4s

so turned on imac g4 800mhz first time since august 2015, , ungodly slow. decided fix that. below few things did improve it.

software update
huge roll in making sure running latest, performance , security. go apple logo “check updates” , if available, install them!



disable automatic update checks, , if have iwork or ilife, sure check updates manually.



save bit of time if starting fresh install of tiger or running earlier version of tiger, download 10.4.11 combo update (180.8mb) , keep handy future usage.

install tenfourfox
important because tweaks , extensions can enable under tff make life easier, big push html5.
download tff here. sure select correct processor!
install adblock. make webpages load faster. <--- i suggest bluhell firewall on adblock, adblock plus or adblock edge. adblock addons have serious memory leak , big heavy cpu users.

if have frequent webpage visit , want access while having load can use tffb make app of webpage.



install tenfourfox tweaks (by @eyoungren , @altemose)
use particular script on ppc machines notice nice improvement in how pages load , every little bit helps. take @ thread here.

disable spotlight , dashboard
both of these great features love use on g5, resource intensive g4 can’t handle , disabling them machine performance.

disable spotlight: open terminal , paste:

sudo launchctl unload -w /system/library/launchdaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist sudo launchctl unload -w /system/library/launchagents/com.apple.spotlight.plist

disable dashboard: open terminal , paste:

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean yes; killall dock

disable effects in ui
taxes systems resources recommend turning them off.
disable dock magnification
set “minimize using:” scale effect
uncheck “animate opening applications"

install , use onyx tiger. use set display of sheets fast set other parameters cannot ordinarily set via normal methods.



remove languages , intel code
each application tiger/leopard era included code in “universal apps” work both intel , ppc , languages. removing reduce size of program , speed program smaller app.
run monolingual 1.3.9 (download on ppc archive utilities page) , click “run”



imac g4 800mhz bit happier. i'm sure not of these tweaks needed on dual processor g4 or g5, consider if have single processor g4. enjoy!

(remember manually check after installing new iwork or ilife apps, there may updates those.)
