About RAM slots used in 4-,8-, and 12 core machines..



there no question fact 4- , 8-core classic macpros should have configuration 3 of4 ram slots used ... "3of4-slots-configuration prferable, but:



remember argument why 6-core or 12-core mp profit 4of4-configuration:

xeons ar able create virtual 3rd core. max out, need sum of real hardre cores can divide 3 pair of real existing cores can create , use third one. if not case, 4th occupied slot brake instead of helping system.

use 4th slot w3690 (6 cores) decrease memory performance (proved in geekbench).

so, magic of multiple of 3 won't work. pretty sure it's same on 12 cores, can't test myself.

, yes, 3 slots matter. 3rd , 4th slots share same channel. therefore, optimum performance, can put ram in slot 1,2, , 3. also, afaik, 4th slot work when there ram stick in slot 3.

since 3rd , 4th slots sharing same channel, no matter how advance cpu, how many cores has. believe use both slots can result in decrease in memory performance.
