hey, picked sandisk 960gb ultra ii sataiii £150 in black friday.
it's going mid-2010 imac, has 12gb ram , seems otherwise fine, apart being slow.
i'm upgrading internal disc drive, it's quite noisy (which apparently sign of dying drive) , it's pretty cheap 3 tb drive added (with fan drive program, of course).
ssd going 'hidden bay' , 3tb movie footage.
anyway, mac repair place said they'd have recommended samsung sell, contains own 'garbage' feature, although conceded new apple trim update should work.
having researched, suggests samsung's 'garbage' feature might stop imac sleeping, actually, sandisk plus apple trim better?
- else running drive in imac of similar age?
- what's best trim setup, official apple terminal command, or third party app?
- if use apple terminal command, third party apps should using optimise ssd?
thanks!
all new ssds have built in garbage collection in firmware, i'm not sure shop referring to.
sure... there lot's of forum members running ssds in older imacs yours. issue imac has sata ii drive interface wont see full speeds advertised sata iii ssd. sata backwards compatible, new sata iii drive work fine. have not heard samsungs interfering sleep.
imo best bang buck ssd samsung evo 850 or crucial mx200. nothing wrong sandisk either. whichever cheapest.
trim, if in newest yosemite version of el capitan, there no need third party utility. run command below in terminal after install ssd , trim activated. no need ssd maintenance utilities either.
code:
sudo trimforce enable
